When Pollution Becomes Health Emergency

Kavrepalanchok, Bagmati ProvinceJun 2026

Allergic To The Air I Breath

This is not just the story of one person; it is the story of many Nepalis who suffer from pollution in Kathmandu. Every time the pollution level increases, I have to prepare my allergy medicine.

As my doctor told me, it is simply an allergy caused by polluted air.

However, for me, it became a real struggle because of my first experience with this condition. During the first semester of my engineering course, I experienced this allergy while staying in a private hostel.

I was completely alone in the middle of the night and had no idea what was happening to me or what I was supposed to do.

The next day, the symptoms became slightly better.

Coincidentally, I had already planned a trip to Dhulikhel with my best friend. We went ahead with the trip, but after climbing the stairs in Dhulikhel, I could not endure it any longer.

My friend took me to the emergency ward, where I received emergency medication and treatment. However, that was not the end of it.

After returning to Kathmandu, I visited Bir Hospital for a proper check-up.

After several examinations, the doctors finally discovered that it was an allergy triggered by polluted air.

Fortunately, it could be controlled with a small daily medicine. What started as a frightening experience eventually became a reminder of how deeply air pollution can affect our health.

For many people in Kathmandu, breathing polluted air is not just an environmental issue,it is a daily health challenge.
