Breathe Easy This Holi

Kathmandu, Kathmandu ValleyJul 2026

Celebrate Wisely

Holi is one of the biggest and most joyful festivals celebrated by the Hindu community.

It brings people together through colours, laughter, and shared happiness.

Celebrating this beautiful festival is important, but there is no rule that says our celebrations should come at the cost of someone else's health. The increasing use of colour bombs and smoke flares may look exciting for a few moments, yet they release fine particles and chemicals into the air that make breathing difficult.

For people living with asthma or other lung diseases, even a short exposure can trigger serious breathing problems.

However, the effects are not limited to them.

Even healthy individuals can experience coughing, throat irritation, burning eyes, and shortness of breath.

Standing in the middle of the smoke for just a few minutes was enough to make it difficult for me to breathe. The impact extends beyond people.

Birds, stray animals, and pets are also forced to inhale the polluted air, causing them stress and respiratory discomfort with no way to escape. Festivals should spread happiness, not pollution.

We can celebrate Holi with colours, music, and togetherness while avoiding unnecessary smoke.

A small change in the way we celebrate can protect our health, safeguard wildlife, and ensure that everyone can enjoy the festival safely.
