Just because AQI isn't "unhealthy" doesn't mean the air is clean. Pollution still affects your health.

Kathmandu, Kathmandu ValleyJul 2026

Daily Life Inside Smoke

Whenever I stand at a busy Kathmandu intersection like this in the evening, watching the familiar rush of micro-buses, cars, and motorbikes pushing through traffic, I am amazed by how quickly we get used to the environment around us.

The hills that wrap around our valley are visible in the background, but they still sit behind a thin, constant layer of smoke and haze.

Because the air does not look completely dark or unbreathable, it is easy to convince ourselves that everything is perfectly fine.

In fact, looking at the data from this past June, the highest AQI falls into the moderate category, it feels like a victory, but the reality on the street tells a different story.Almost nobody riding these bikes or walking along the road is wearing a mask.

We have collectively decided that unless the dust is blinding or the air is thick enough to sting our eyes, there is nothing to worry about.

It is a bad habit because we ignore the steady, silent pollution from hundreds of engines just because it does not look like an immediate crisis.

As a community, our biggest challenge is recognizing that even a moderate haze is still pollution we breathe into our lungs every single day.

Real awareness begins when we stop waiting for a major emergency to start taking personal responsibility for the air we all share.
