Pollution Doesn't End at the Riverbank But Also Rises Air Pollution

Kathmandu, Kathmandu ValleyJun 2026

Harmful Air For Children

The Bagmati and Manohara rivers flow through Kathmandu and Lalitpur, yet untreated wastewater and sewage still enter them.

While children play sports and families spend time near these rivers, many may not realize the health risks around them. Polluted rivers release foul-smelling gases and harmful pollutants that can irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs.

During dry seasons, stagnant sewage worsens air quality and creates unhealthy conditions for nearby communities. Many parents bring their children outdoors for fresh air and exercise, but polluted environments can expose them to contaminated dust and airborne bacteria. We do see the government has made efforts to improve river conditions through cleanup campaigns, wastewater management projects, and stricter regulations.

These initiatives have helped raise awareness and improve some sections of the rivers.

However, the continued discharge of untreated sewage and waste shows that the current efforts are still not enough.

Stronger implementation, better infrastructure, and greater public participation are needed to create lasting change. A polluted river is not just a water problem,it is a public health problem.

Clean rivers and clean air go hand in hand, and every child deserves a safe and healthy place to play.
