“The air carries prayers upward and the pollutants inward.”
Holy Air, Unholy Reality
At first glance, this picture seems like a simple scene of devotion.
Incense burns, smoke drifts upward, and prayers are offered in silence.
It is a familiar sight, something that many of us associate with peace, faith, and tradition. Yet the smoke in this frame also feels strangely familiar for another reason.
Across many cities, smoke and haze have become part of everyday life.
We check air quality reports, carry masks, and continue with our routines beneath skies that are often far from clear.
What was once considered alarming has gradually become normal. This photograph is not about blaming tradition or comparing one source of smoke to another.
Instead, it captures an irony of our time: we pause to seek blessings for health and well-being while often accepting air that threatens both. The smoke from these incense sticks will disappear in a few moments.
The ultimate question is whether the haze beyond these walls will disappear just as easily.
