“Sacrificing our health for a highway”
Horrors of Daily Commute
This is the present condition of the 69-kilometer road expansion plan extending from Butwal to Gorunsinghe.
Hundreds of daily commuters including office workers, students, and wage workers use this road every single day.
Scenes of thick dust, slippery roads and many accidents on a daily basis is a regular scene of this highway.
A regular commuter Ms.Paudyal says, nowadays she prefers using longer commutes and avoids the highway whenever possible.
She testifies that by the time she reaches her office, she often experiences a noticeable itch in her eyes, skin irritation and headaches that persist for the entire day.
“A little bit of pollution is bound to happen for a better highway” seems to be the common sentiment of most of the local residents.
Meanwhile, some residents worry if this 3 year long project with excessive exposure to dust and poor air quality could trigger chronic health issues and respiratory problems.
