A Moment of Joy, A lasting Cause

Patan, Lalitpur, Kathmandu ValleyJul 2026

Smoke behind Smiles

The flames in this scene create an atmosphere of excitement, drawing people together for a brief moment of happiness.

As the fire burns brightly, it fills the air with smoke that is often ignored in the excitement.

What appears beautiful for a few minutes leaves behind pollutants that remain in the environment long after the flames disappear. Burning dry grass, straw, and other materials releases fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and toxic gases into the atmosphere.

These pollutants reduce air quality, making it difficult to breathe and increasing the risk of respiratory diseases.

The smoke spreads beyond the immediate area, affecting nearby residents, children, older adults, and anyone exposed to it. The fire also releases carbon dioxide, adding to greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

When similar burning takes place repeatedly, the combined effect becomes a serious environmental concern.

Air pollution is not always caused by factories or vehicles; even small fires can silently damage the air we all depend on. A few minutes of celebration can leave behind hours of polluted air.

True happiness should never come at the cost of clean air, healthy lungs, and a safer environment for everyone.
