Where does the waste from livestock farming eventually go?

Rupandehi, Lumbini ProvinceJun 2026

The Compost Site

The smell makes you hold your breath when you walk past it.

Across the road from this buffalo farm is a large compost dumping area where buffalo dung and urine accumulate for months to be sold to farmers as fertilizer. This natural compost is vital during farming seasons but its decomposition process releases harmful gases such as ammonia and methane along with other microorganisms into the atmosphere.

Such open dumping sites heavily affect the surrounding environment and local air quality.

During rainy days, the odor becomes even stronger which makes it difficult to ignore when you walk past it. While compost helps crops grow, the process of creating it affects the quality of the air around us.
